Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion for about 4 minutes until translucent. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, cooking for 8-10 minutes until browned. Drain excess fat, then stir in crushed tomatoes, beef broth, minced garlic, white sugar, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low for 30 minutes until thickened.
  2. Mix Cheese Layer: In a bowl, beat the egg and combine it with shredded mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, and parsley. Add a pinch of salt and a dash of Italian seasoning. Mix until smooth.
  3. Cook Lasagna Noodles: Bring salted water to a rolling boil, then add lasagna noodles. Cook for 7-8 minutes until al dente, stirring occasionally. Drain and lay flat on parchment paper.
  4. Assemble Lasagna: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a casserole dish, spread 1 cup of meat sauce. Layer 4 noodles on top, then half of the cheese mixture. Add about 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with another layer of noodles, the rest of the meat sauce, and top with the remaining mozzarella.
  5. Bake: Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes until bubbling and golden. Consider broiling for an extra 2-3 minutes.
  6. Rest and Serve: Let your lasagna sit for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with basil if desired.

Notes

Aim for a thick sauce to prevent a soggy lasagna. Proper layering enhances flavor distribution. Don't skip the resting time for easier slicing.
