Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 6 large buttery croissants Substitution note: Brioche or sourdough also work beautifully.
  • 1 cup diced ham Substitution note: Bacon or turkey can be used for a lighter option.
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese Substitution note: Try mozzarella or pepper jack for different flavor profiles.
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese Substitution note: Grana Padano or nutritional yeast can serve as a vegan swap.
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Substitution note: Almond milk or other non-dairy alternatives work great too.
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme Substitution note: Fresh herbs can brighten things up if you have them on hand.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Substitution note: Fresh minced garlic can offer an even stronger flavor.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh chives, chopped Can substitute with green onions or parsley for variety.

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • medium bowl

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cut each croissant into quarters and spread them evenly in the greased baking dish. Sprinkle the diced ham and shredded Swiss cheese over the croissants.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until smooth. Add thyme, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste, mixing well.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissants, ham, and cheese. Gently press down to soak the croissants in the egg mixture.
  5. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes, then cut into squares and garnish with chopped chives.
