Step-by-Step Instructions for Meatball Sub
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and grease a baking sheet with canola oil.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine a beaten egg with water, yellow onion, garlic, panko, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Gently incorporate ground beef, mixing until just combined. Shape into 1.5-inch meatballs and place on the baking sheet.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  5. Heat marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium-low heat, then add baked meatballs and let simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Split hoagie rolls and place them cut-side up on a baking sheet; broil for about 2 minutes until golden.
  7. Layer cheese inside toasted rolls, fill with meatballs and marinara sauce, then sprinkle additional cheese on top.
  8. Return to the broiler for another 2 minutes to melt the cheese.
