For the Meatballs
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs use gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed
  • 1/2 cup Milk can replace with dairy-free milk or omit
  • 1 large Egg or a flax egg for a vegan alternative
  • 2 cloves Garlic finely chopped; garlic powder can be used
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Parsley finely chopped; substitute with dried parsley
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated; can substitute with Pecorino Romano
  • 1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil can swap with canola or avocado oil
For the Tomato Sauce
  • 1 medium Onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 15 oz Crushed Tomatoes canned
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • 2 bay leaves Bay Leaves can be omitted
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic, parsley, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until incorporated.
  2. Form mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Aim for 12-15 meatballs.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat with olive oil. Sear the meatballs about 5-6 minutes until golden brown.
  4. In a saucepan, heat more olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onion and minced garlic until softened. Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, bay leaves, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add the seared meatballs to the sauce, cover, and let them simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Serve the meatballs warm, garnished with parsley or Parmesan cheese as desired.
